Bed bugs in used furniture.

Bed bugs have been found with several pathogens. BUT, they have not been known to actually transmit the pathogens. That is because many things must be present for the transmission to occur. Can you get VD by rubbing the nose of someone with VD? It's something like that with bed bugs. Remember that they draw blood. They are not giving it away. The time between feedings is enough time that passage from one host to another via the bed bug does not occur.

That is correct. I can't stop you from buying new furniture, but you are taking a risk in this day and age. There are many people today who have two things they need: 1) money and 2) old furniture. Sadly, they already have bed bugs. So they take the old furniture down to the used furniture store for some needed money. You get both replacement furniture and bed bugs, at a great price! That is until you pay the 2K bed bug bill! Also, don't even think of picking up used furniture off the street. Few people will announce that the furniture they threw out has bed bugs. You don't need to take this risk.

Which do you think is a better technique for killing bed bugs and keeping them away?
Heating for large areas and Freezing for small areas
I think heating is the better technique, if you are trying to cover a large area. You can heat an entire house. But I don't know anyone who is attempting to freeze a whole house. Freezing is great as a safe local treatment that will kill the eggs.

Seems like bed bugs are making there way south
I've been getting more and more calls for bed bugs in San Diego. Are they coming down from San Francisco or up from Tijuana?

Can you identify the pest simply by examining the bites?
Well, it is very helpful. Different pests have different parts for biting / injecting. Some pests are naturally appear in larger numbers than others. The marks left are larger or smaller. Some look lik pin pricks whereas others look more like welts. But remember, people react differently. There is evidence to suggest that a large percentage of people don't even react to bed bug bites. Also, once the reaction occurs, there is another variable. How will the person react to the bite? Will he or she leave the bite alone or scratch it repeatedly. These are a few considerations that cause the examiner to look for other symptoms as well. The best situation is when you can find the bug.
